Capitol Hill visits

Josh bloggingAmy and I spent the morning visiting with health staff on Capitol Hill. Amy knows everybody! We went to see staff in offices that we don’t have families visiting, including those of Congressmen Markey, Lynch, and Capuano. Each of these offices has a strong and longstanding commitment to child health and to supporting Children’s Hospital Boston.

One of the things we spoke about with each office is the importance of making sure that the right kinds of benefits are available to meet children’s needs which can be very different than adult needs. For example, we talked a lot about coverage for developmental screening, for rehab services that help children with special health needs reach their potential (as opposed to recover from an injury), etc. The staffers were very receptive and clearly want to make sure any new legislation works for children. They also emphasized that we need to stay in touch and come back to them if and when we see problems in any legislative language.
